The town of Clun gets its name from the river it is situated on, which is called Colunwy in Welsh. This root word is also shared by two other rivers, Colne in Lancashire and Essex, which each have a town named after them. Clun was established in the late 7th century AD around an Anglo-Saxon church, but there was already a scattered population in the area going back to the Neolithic period around 5000 years ago. Clun was situated on a historic road where animals were driven from Wales to be sold in markets in the Midlands and London. At the time of the Norman Conquest, Clun was part of the lands owned by Eadric the Wild, who rebelled against King William I and had his lands taken away and given to Roger de Montgomery, who became Earl of Shrewsbury.
