Clun is situated in the South Shropshire Hills in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close to the border of Wales. The Clun and Kerry Forests, Offa’s Dyke and Kerry Ridgeway are all close by.
In the 14th century, Clun was given its town charter and it is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a protected landscape. It used to be a lively and busy center with numerous shops and pubs, along with its renowned livestock markets, from medieval times until the mid-20th century. The town of Clun gets its name from the river it is situated on, which is called Colunwy in Welsh. This root word is also shared by two other rivers, Colne in Lancashire and Essex, which each have a town named after them.
